Reimagine My Community

Site Design and Geek

We like words and images

Words are important, but we also lean on imagery.

We choose and curate images to communicate a certain thrust or emphasis. Sometimes we do this with nuanced meanings or hints. A picture is worth a thousand words.

There are exceptions! This page is informational. So we skipped the images!

We commit this site to visual imagery running in parallel with words. Visual imagery in our thinking means images, graphic designs, and video streams.

Accessibility and Audio

We look forward to providing Accessibility coupled with Audio resources. We recognize this is important. We do not yet have full resources for all this involves, but we view this as a priority.

We Aren't Experts

We know there are folks out there who eat and drink visual imagery and graphics. We know there are skilled people who can take our website to another level. We don’t have all the skills or design experience to get to that level.

Over time, we might want to talk to you. We are doing what we can with very limited resources. It’s all volunteer. Foremost, we are Community people and think about that topic a lot.

We know there are additional graphics skills that can benefit the overall look and feel of the site.

See our Roadmap as well.

We like to write and think in creative ways. That’s our strong suit.

Oh—almost forgot. We will speak up when we think things are amiss in our world.

Respectfully. But we will speak.

Our Technology

We don’t broadcast a lot of this, but we are happy to share some basics.

We use Elementor Pro. We have no problems with cutting code in other languages or direct via HTML and CSS. Our primary constraint is time to do these types of things.

For digital assets, we work in Affinity or Adobe products. We like to work on a Mac.

When we use stock photos, we license them through reputable providers. We respect digital artists and value their work and time spent developing creative art for the world to enjoy.

Written content development? If it is more involved, then we use Scrivener for a rough draft and then Word. For smaller blocks of content, we often do that right in WordPress. To bring content to a press-ready PDF, we like to use InDesign or Affinity Publisher.

We get annoyed at some of the licensing models that are in use today. We like to use Open Source as much as we can and when it makes sense to use it. Sometimes team skills mean we need to use commercial software as learning curves for change can be too much. Or there are features in commercial software that we need. Only so many hours in the day!

We like the direction Affinity is taking with the Big-3 (Design, Photo and Publish). We use and like Serif’s products.

Quality raster and vector creation in GIMP and Inkscape are in scope for us. We do our best to optimize content for various consuming devices and core static image formats (JPEG, PNG, WebP).

We push content from local development to production. Staging—with quality assurance steps—is part of our process. All of this is a work in progress as we stabilize and tune.

Content Delivery

We use a commercial data center, with known best practices, and use a CDN (Content Delivery Network).

Our journey of content and performance tuning continues.

Help Keep us Safe

We know that “The System” has been a challenge for some of you out there. Some of you know the internet and tech stuff at depth.

Regardless of your country and race, we speak for you in so many ways as we seek to better our world, and your world, through our work.

Help keep us safe.

Thanks.
