One summer evening, Sam the dog and Ellie began their Journey … at the beach with some friends. The sunset, my bro’s sister on the guitar, and shared food and drink, invited connection, laughter and discussion.
But then the convo changed … and upsetting memories and future thoughts flashed through Sam’s and Ellie’s memories.
Wondering
Toxic fumes from factories and forest fire smoke are best viewed at sunset.
Clearcut logging helps visibility.
Our World
Climate Change, sea levels, corporations, politics, power, housing, work and other contemporary topics soon filled the air. Our world was changing.
As usual, The System often paid little useful attention to younger voices. Or other concerned voices—regardless of age.
Sam and Ellie listened in. Focused. The exchange was lively. But the topics felt challenging.
Ellie elephant-nudged Sam—she needed to talk. They walked to their favorite spot further down the beach. Then they talked more about the beach chat with their friends.
But the weather changed and so had the course of their lives.
Prep
With a long rope, they towed a raft and put their stock on the raft. Ellie brought several tons of hay and huge drums of fresh water. Sam insisted on boring kibble-rations and stacks of meat-lover’s pizza. Ellie loaded in a few pallet loads of her faves: fruit and tree-bark wraps.
They even put in an umbrella in case of rain or too much sun.
Sam and Ellie were determined to find answers. Their questions went far beyond prepping and their little boat and raft.
After all, their whole life was ahead of them.
Hope
It was an exhausting Journey.
At long last, in the distance … a lighthouse and a tiny village beckoned. They beached their boat and raft, and began to walk towards their destination.
